If it were possible to always move forward and onward with our dreams and aspirations, we would no doubt all be winners and fully enlightened by now! Now let's include the two steps backwards for every three steps forward and we'll figure out that we've walked around the world and we're right back where we started.
So what's happening?  Do we just like punishing efforts which ultimately deny us the rewards we seek?  (Also known as masochism).
Is something wrong here?
Yes of course!    In order to move forward into the joy and happiness that we long for, we must first face the lack of joy and the unhappiness in our past.
Self-Deprecating Behavior
Most people are so terrified of the suffering of facing their past that they continue to slide back to it, rather than risk the pain that finally winning and being happy will bring them.
But you are a beautiful person full of talents and vitality and deserve everything you aspire to.  And so it's time to brave moving forward! As Your Personal Muse I hereby ordain that for every two steps forward you will travel three. And I'll meet you in heaven some day with a smile on your face.
But there you go again...
Denying yourself    Questioning yourself               Doubting yourself                         Lying to yourself                               Cheating yourself                                        Tricking yourself                                           Sabotaging yourself                                               De-animating yourself                                                      Un-passioning yourself                                                                 Un-focusing yourself                                                                       Unmotivating yourself... and sliding backwards once again.
Unfortunately, I can't help you until you consent to help yourself instead, and stop . . .
Denigrating yourself, ridiculing yourself, criticizing judging yourself, punishing yourself, and generally deprecating yourself.

Self-Deprecating Behavior
Let's call your traits and behaviors the backpack you're carrying on your back. Certain supplies in your pack are lighter than air and help you double your steps forward or cheer you on during the hard parts.  These supplies are hope, faith, belief, encouragement, trust, support, approval, care, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, affection, and Love.
Unfortunately, for the self sabotager or professional denigrator, the poor worn old pack is bulging at the seams with some unfortunate anchors and anvils which someone stuffed into your pack.  Anvils and anchors called criticism, ridicule, judgement, doubt, absence, indifference, anger, violence, punishment, abuse, and trauma. How are you going to continue your trek up that slope called dreams and aspirations with that payload?   No wonder you're sliding backwards.
So you're doomed right? You and the death pack are inseparable?
Luckily for you beautiful one,  WRONG, WRONG, AND WRONG AGAIN.

Self-Deprecating Behavior
Your Personal Muse's trekking checklist to lessen and some day eliminate climbing the same mountain over and over and over again:
Tears, grieving, and catharsis are all medicine for lightening your emotional load.  Your Personal Muse is just a Sherpa to carry the first aid kit.  Only you can open it and put it to use!  Why and how are you going to succeed?    Because you deserve it and because you want to.  The rest is just one step after the other!

Yes of course!  On a very powerful unconscious level, we gain more when we fail or slide backwards then when we live up to our aspirations.
Self-Deprecating Behavior Self-Deprecating Behavior Checklist What's in your pack? (Bowling balls and lead balloons) Who packed it? (Your parents and people during your birth, baby, and childhood, in that order). Take off that dreaded thing, and in your heart, turn around and face the ones who improperly outfitted you. Do what every person who fails to reach the pinnacle of Everest does: Cry, grieve, yell, scream, regret, blame, jump up and down, throw things. Move forward because your pack is now lighter. Do it again. Repeat. Now 10 steps forward, 9 back. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Now steps 3 through 5 again. 10 steps forward, now only 8 back.
