Phobias
A phobia is a fear of a fear! A fear to the second power, or an exponential fear.
What exactly is a phobia?
Paralyzing. Hysterical. Terrifying.
Is there anything in our adult lives that could equate the “full battle stations”
effect of an irrational phobia? No.
Why say irrational phobia? Because our rational, conscious mind in all its attempt to
understand and manage our phobia . . . fails. Our phobias are not rational.
“What could be irrational about my self?,” the little chunk of ice says, floating around in
the water. “Perhaps that you are an iceberg,” says the ocean, “and most of you lies
hidden and you are unaware of it.” And we people are like icebergs. The vast majority
of our self lies under the water line, behind the veil of our unconscious. And so are
phobias unconscious? Yes.
Are our phobias irrational even to our unconscious minds? Absolutely not.
We became terrified of our own feeling of feeling terrified, so that we
may remain un terrified. How very sad for us all. For we go on
suffering in an attempt to not suffer.
Phobias
If we could remember the prototype event that
caused us the original terror, the original life
threatening, paralyzing event, we would then feel
so very rational.
“Wow!,” we would say. “No wonder I am so terrified! Now I understand!”
But understanding will not take away the phobia, it will only add understanding and
acceptance to it, and this alone is no small thing. Like all fears, phobias are hiding a
deeper meaning, a deeper feeling.
And towards this deeper feeling one must travel in search of the original fear which
turned to phobia.
If we experience a phobia of heights, it is because we are in terror of
falling. But it is not the height in the present which we are terrified of, it
is the terror of having fallen so far, and so long ago which we are
terrified of.
